5 Things Next-Level Leaders Always Do

Posted by Scott Williams on May 27th 2009

next-levelThis post will take a look at the process of being or becoming a Next-Level Leader.  There are probably a dozen different concepts of what a Next-Level Leader is or what that word-pairing actually means; however in this post I will provide my personal definition of what a Next-Level Leader is.  I will also identify the 5 Things That Next-Level Leaders Do.

Next-Level Leader- A leader that not only elevates their personal leadership to that Next-Level, but elevates the leadership of their team members, peers and competition to the Next-Level.

Here are the 5 Things That Next-Level Leaders Always Do:

  1. Challenge Everything-They challenge things because they are supposed to be challenged.  They not only challenge the thoughts/methods of their leaders but they challenge their own personal methodology.  They realize that their boss puts their pants on just like they do and embrace the fact that just because a person is supervising doesn’t mean they are necessarily smarter or better leaders.  Challenging things is not about being combative, but rather raising every-one’s leadership game to the Next-Level.
  2. Ask The Right Questions- They always ask the right questions… They begin sentences with “What If?, Have You Ever Thought About?, This Might Sound Crazy, but do you think we can…”  Anytime they have the opportunity to sit down with a Next-Level Leader they desire to learn from, they have a list of questions and not a list of answers.  They take their leadership game to the Next-Level by asking the right questions.
  3. Dream- They are always dreaming and imagining.  Some of these dreams may seem to be a fairy-tale to some, but not to a Next-Level Leader.  A Next-Level Leader will schedule an appointment to dream, they go to Starbucks and Dream, they close their office door and dream, they take a vacation alone to do nothing but dream.  They take their leadership game to the Next-Level by dreaming,  encouraging those around them to dream, writing their dreams down and making those dreams a reality.
  4. Learn-  They are always learning from: books, blogs, their industry, history, other industries, culture, failures, their followers, other Next-Level Leaders…   They have a mantra something like Will Rogers’ Mantra (I never met a man I didn’t like) The Next-Level “I Never Met a Man, Woman or Situation that I didn’t learn from.”  They elevate their leadership game to the next level by realizing that learning is fundamental.
  5. Make Next-Level Leaders- Next-Level Leaders make Next-Level Leaders.  Next-Level Leaders contribute to the world of leadership by always developing Next-Level Leaders.  They never confuse Management with Leadership.  Managers manage people and things… Next-Level Leaders make other Next-Level Leaders.  Simply put: “If You Are Not Developing and Making Next-Level Lea

What to be praying for as Leaders:

Pray that...
    1.  People will attend one more weekend a month than they presently do (praying for 9500 in weekly attendance).
    2.  People will take their NEXT STEP by connecting through serving and small groups (praying for 500 salvations during this series; 600 @ Beach Baptism).
    3.  People will live generous lives through their tithes and offerings (praying for $165,000 each week).

Leadership defined by Pastor Troy

Our Pastor has been given a passion & gift in bringing out the Leader within us. In our last Staff Meeting, he taught on Leadership Skills WE NEED to carry the Vision & Mission we were created to do. Skills that will better equip you as Small Group Leaders. I had to share!

*LEADERSHIP SIMULATOR: ability to see & learn leadership anywhere (ie, was the mtg about a task, or did I leverage the mtg to build or equip leaders  - if you’re not careful it becomes about the task ). Leadership is the ability to learn & grow & be wiling to learn leadership wherever we go. See the whole world as a learning op. What Leadership op have you learned today? Learn to see leadership lessons everywhere & all the time.

*BE A TRUTHTELLER:  being honest about what you’ve already decided. Integrity demands it. Truthtelling is not, telling it the way it is or calling it the way you see it. Its not an email outlining what they did wrong. And its not about position. TT is not just down on an org chart, its also upwards. If you don’t speak up, you are agreeing. And once you release it, God will keep the Leader above me accountable. One sure sign that you must speak up is if you cant sleep at night, Im going to talk about it….

*20/20 VISION:  the ability to leverage vision to take you to take you where you’ve never been.  Some truths about Vision are that:

- Vision leaks – people forget why we do what we do

- Vision creates alignment.

- Vision values, ethos & verses – we have to agree in those areas. Generated by God, given by one, guarded by ALL.

*EXTREME LEADERSHIP EXECUTION:  ability to perform ministry in the top 20% consistently. Today’s results are the outcomes of yesterdays execution. The eval & correction of execution is what makes a Leader, a great leader.

*ENERGY LEVERAGING: the ability to use preexisting energy to produce predetermined outcome.

Ask yourself, do you use people to create a great ministry or use the ministry to build the person?

INNOVENTION: the ability to create the tools needed to accomplish the Vision   Edison create the TOOLS that we need to accomplish the Vision. Driving force behind this is passion. Convince people that its possible. Teach people you will fail, but fail forward. We can wait for others to do it, or create the tools we need & be 3 steps ahead.

CATCH & RELEASE:  catch big leaders with the vision & then release them to accomplish the vision. Leaders don’t travel in packs. Leaders are like catching a shark – you gotta go AFTER it. You have to learn, read, maximize your time. Pour into them & release them, but first power feed them 2 things – our Ethos (what we value) & the Vision (what we run after But make it informal.

  • people would act in obedience to the Great Commission & share their God story
  • people would experience encouragement, accountability & commitment by doing life together
